Micromax already had a 6 inch phablet, Canvas Xl selling for 13,000 INR or in the same segment as doodle 2. With Doodle 3, Micromax could have opted for a 6 Inch octa core MT6592 phablet priced above 15K, but Micromax has targeted the low priced dual core market, similar to the first tablet in Doodle series, with the new Doodle 3. Are the things back to where they started? Let’s take a look.

Camera and Internal Storage

The primary camera included in Doodle 3 phablet has a 5 MP sensor similar to most other MT6572 smartphones in budget Android segment. The camera is also supported by LED flash for low light photography. The rear camera can record 720p HD videos. Front camera is equally uninteresting with a VGA sensor and will suffice for basic video calling. The Internal storage is again standard 4 GB. You get the option to expand it further with 32 GB of microSD secondary storage. The storage is the most you can expect at this price range.

Processor and Battery

The processor used is Dual core MT6572, from MediaTek, which can be found in most other present generation dual core smartphones. Both cores are clocked at 1.3 GHz and are paired with Mali 400 GPU and 512 MB RAM. The chipset is meant for basic usage which includes basic social media apps and some light gaming. The battery capacity is 2500 mAh. Micromax claims 260 hours of standby time and 9 hours of talk time from this device. We are not sure how long this will last while web browsing or playing videos as the massive 6 inch display is expected to heavily tax it.

Display and Other Features

The display is 6 inches in size and features 854 x 480 pixels. The dismal pixel density of 163 ppi implies that your display will be soft with visible pixilation. Incase this is your first smartphone and you might find the display quite usable. The phone runs on Android 4.2.2 jelly bean operating system which will offer rich access to android eco system. Like all other Canvas series smartphones, you will get dual SIM dual Standby connectivity. What is missing, is the Capacitive stylus which has been a distinguishing feature of Canvas Doodle Series

Comparison

You won’t find many large display phablets below 10k range. The phone will compete with likes of Zync Z605, Gionee GPad G3, Karbonn Titanium S9 and Micromax Canvas XL.

Conclusion and Price

Micromax has made some grave compromises to cut the cost. Doodle brand was evolving towards a high end product with doodle 2 and we would have liked to see the series evolve further towards a high end 6 inch phablet with Octa core CPU. The Phone has been priced at Rs. 8,500 and in case you are looking for that extra extra large display in low cost price range, you could go for doodle 3 at the cost of user experience. To further sweeten the pot, Micromax is also offering free magnetic flip cover and 6 month subscription for BigFlix.
